Photo term: Fill the frame
Fill the frame? What is it, and why should you care? How to create using your smartphone?
I bet you have already used this concept but haven't realized the correct name of it.
This technique is one of the most popular options for creating a stunning photo without much effort.
It forces the viewer's eyes directly on your main subject, and in the world of desserts, who wouldn't want to focus on a mouth-watering treat?
The picture above was cropped to show the full frame of these beautiful cupcakes.
Benefits of filling the frame
- Reduces busyness in your photo.
- Instantly draws attention to your main subject.
- It makes the photo more engaging.
How to fill the frame
- Move closer to your subject (try not to zoom in during this stage)
- Crop your image during post-production **last resort** (see the editing module on how to crop in the Dessert Photography Course.
Things to consider
- You don't have to overcrowd the frame. Space your items enough so the viewer can tell what's in the photo.
- This works with single or multiple items.
- Be aware of your backdrop so that your main subject does not clash with the backdrop (it will defeat the purpose of a full-frame photo)
- Editing is still essential!!!
- You don't have to fill the entire frame. It's okay to leave room around the edges of your photo.
- Angles are important to consider when taking a full-frame photo. (learn about angles in the Dessert Photography Course).
- This technique is one of many composition techniques and shouldn't be used for every photo.
Pictured above is a single shot using the fill the frame technique, leaving a little room on the frame's right-hand side.
